Board of Directors Policy Development

The Board of Directors has implemented procedures for policy development to ensure two things:

  • The need for the policy is identified.
  • The mission and vision of the school is maintained.
Suggestions to policy changes or additions should adhere to the following procedure:
  1. First, ensure the need for the policy. Check the LCS website for existing policies or a possible conflict to the proposed policy.

  2. Next, review the LCS mission and vision and ensure that the proposed policy is supported by the mission and vision.

  3. If the first two requirements have been met, you can proceed to propose policy changes or additions.
    • If you are an LCS staff member, submit your policy in writing to the Executive Director of Education. LCS staff will work together to revise the policy, if necessary. If the submission is supported by the Executive Director of Education, he will submit the proposed policy to the board president for inclusion in the next board packet.

    • If you are not an LCS staff member, submit your policy in writing to the . You and the board president will work together to revise the policy, if necessary. The board president will then consult with the Executive Director of Education. If the submission is supported by the board president and the Executive Director of Education, s/he will submit the proposed policy in the next board packet.

  4. The policy will next be considered by the school board in a meeting open to the public. All information needed for the board to consider a topic must be submitted to the board president by noon seven days prior to the board meeting. If the information is not complete, it will not be included. If the deadline is missed, the information will be included in the following meeting. Note: The board only votes at board meetings and not work sessions. Refer to the posted meeting agendas for the proposed policy change or addition and details regarding which meeting the board will consider the policy.

Please note the submission deadline for inclusion in a board packet.
  5. After discussion of the proposed policy in a board meeting and if the board wants to continue developing the policy, the board president will submit the policy to legal counsel. The policy and legal counsel's feedback will be included a second time in a board packet for possible adoption. Policies are voted upon and pass with a majority vote.
  6. Once policy has been adopted, the board president will do the following:
    • send the policy to the LCS webmaster for inclusion on the website,
    • upload the policy to the board members' reference library,
    • send it to the Thompson School District per our charter contract, and
    • send it to LCS administration so they can notify affected staff.
